The 24th Bungay Black Dog Marathon was run for the first time from its new home on Maltings Meadow and apart from a stiff breeze on parts of the rural Waveney valley course it was the perfect weather for running. The Mayor of Bungay, Chris Caswell, started the Marathon at 10.30 and the Half Marathon at 12.30 which ensured that runners in both races finished together

The runners were encouraged by enthusiastic spectators as they ran through Bungay, Beccles and the villages of Gillingham and Geldeston and were cheered home by supporters waiting in the grandstand on the playing field at the finish.

First man home was marathon winner James Hartop in a time of 2 hours 48 minutes 49 seconds who was unaffiliated, the ladies marathon winner was Wendy King of Chelmsford A C in 3.14.18 The first Bungay Black Dog Running Club runner was Craig Anderson 4.15.01.

Black Dogs David Cook and Bob Jack also completed the full marathon. A total 156 runners competed the Marathon. Kevin Murphy of Woodford Green won the Half Marathon men’s race in a time of 1.11.55 and the ladies was won by Helen Decker of Ipswich Jaffa in 1.25.21. The first Bungay Black Dog runner was Steve Barratt in time of 1.24.21 and the first lady was Rachel Percy in a time of 1.49.41. A total of 382 runners completed the Half Marathon

The ‘Roger Wing’ Cup, presented to the runner who best epitomises the spirit of the Bungay Marathon, was presented to Robin Wilson of Collingwood A C who first came to Bungay in 1987 and was competing in his 12th Bungay Marathon, aged 73 he was the oldest runner in the Marathon

A Family Fun Run took place and 11.00 when young and old completed two laps of the outer perimeter of the playing fields. The days proceedings were completed by Mary Kent the Bungay Town Reeve who presented the prizes in the splendid new clubhouse.

The Bungay Marathon raises money for local charities and this year’s charity is EACH Quidenham branch. The committee would like to express its thanks to the runners who run, and raise sponsorship, to the vast army of helpers who give up their day to ensure the event can be staged, and to the many Local Companies and Organisations who sponsor the race by providing funds, facilities, and or services,
